Prostate cancer patients are receiving world-class treatment at St George Hospital’s Prostate Cancer Institute with the second stage of construction now complete.
In officially opening the facility in Kogarah today, the
Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, Jillian
Skinner, said the institute had the potential to make Sydney a
leader in prostate cancer care.
"The Prostate Cancer Institute will be a major advance for
sufferers because it offers a comprehensive and sophisticated range
of treatment options, state-of-the-art assessment and continuing
care programs for men and their families," Minister Skinner
said.
"Prostate cancer affects one in nine men so I am very pleased to
see that this second stage of construction includes a brachytherapy
operating suite, a CT scan room, control rooms and additional
offices in the ground floor areas," she said.
"Patients will receive holistic care and management by a team of
experts dedicated to minimising side effects and improving health
outcomes."
The Cancer Care Centre at St George Hospital is one of the
busiest cancer centres in the state. The number of men referred to
the centre for treatment has nearly doubled in the past decade,
with 250 new referrals each year.
Mrs Skinner thanked the community-based fundraising committee,
led by its chairman, John Green, who raised more than $2.28 million
toward the new building.
The NSW Government contributed $860,000 for equipment to fit out
the new treatment areas.
"The St George community has a long and proud history of
supporting its hospital and that is certainly evident here today,"
Minister Skinner said.
"Community support for this project has been outstanding and the
Prostate Cancer Institute fundraising committee deserves high
praise for their commitment to make this project a reality."
