Before undergoing this type of surgery, it is important that you are as fit and healthy as possible. There are a number of things you can do to improve your health and fitness.
Cease smoking
It is highly recommended that you cease smoking for at least one month prior to surgery. Staff or your local doctor can advise you on how to achieve this. For example, they may suggest nicotine patches or nicotine gum to help you to stop smoking.
Cease drinking alcohol
In order that you are in the best condition before surgery, it is highly recommended that you don’t drink alcohol for one month prior to your surgery.
Eat a healthy diet
You should eat a normal varied healthy diet. Your specialist, local doctor or dietician can provide you with a list of recommended foods to include in your diet before surgery.
If you are very underweight, you may need to start oral supplements or protein-rich drinks before your surgery. Your doctor will tell you if this is necessary and will recommend what you need.
Five to seven days before your surgery, your doctor may recommend some specific supplements (immunotherapy) to add to your diet to reduce your risk of infection.
Exercise
Improving your level of fitness can help you recover faster after surgery. If possible, try and aim to do around 20–30 minutes of gentle to moderate physical activity, such as walking, at least two to three times a week.
If you have a history of lung disease or difficulty breathing, it is important to do deep breathing exercises before surgery. Staff can provide you with an information sheet about breathing exercises if this would be helpful.
