If it is decided that you will undergo either an oesophagectomy (removal of the food pipe), or a gastrectomy (removal of the stomach), this is major surgery. It is better to have major surgery at hospitals that do a lot of this type of surgery, and to have your care overseen by a team of cancer specialists who are experienced in this surgery.
Know what to expect
You may have questions you wish to ask before your surgery. Remember that your surgeon is the best person to answer these questions.
Before your appointment with your surgeon, try to write down all the questions you may have so that you remember to ask them prior to your surgery. Bringing a relative or friend to the appointment as a support person could be helpful.
They can help you to remember what has been discussed at your appointment. Asking your surgeon to draw a diagram may also help you in understanding the operation.
Understand the risk of complications
As you are undergoing major surgery, there are potential complications which may slow your recovery. Pre-existing conditions, such as heart or lung problems, may potentially slow your recovery process.
Please don’t hesitate to discuss these potential complications, and the impact of your pre-existing conditions with your surgeon.
