Cancer clinical trials program

Our purpose

The key actions of the Cancer Institute NSW’s Clinical Trials Program include building the capability of the cancer control workforce, investing in research infrastructure and improving the cancer clinical trial landscape for patients and the clinical trial workforce.

Guided by the goals of the NSW Cancer Plan 2022–2027, the Clinical Trials Program works across the overarching principles of:

  • Equity: by providing opportunities to participate in clinical trials for all
  • Person-centredness: by ensuring information about participating in clinical trials is clear and easy to understand, and
  • Collaboration: ensure that people in NSW have access to cutting-edge clinical trials.

The Cancer Institute NSW does not conduct clinical trials.

Supporting cancer clinical trials in NSW

The Institute supports Local Health Districts (LHDs), Specialty Networks (NS), and private sites in NSW by providing  funding that enables clinical trial units to meet their goals as set in the Cancer Clinical Trials Strategic Plan. Allocation of funding is at the discretion each LHD, SN and private site.

Performance indicators

Using clinical trial activity data submitted into the program’s Portal, the Cancer Institute NSW reports on cancer clinical trials performance indicators at the LHD and state-wide level, providing information to cancer care providers about clinical trial activity in their sector and how it compares to others in the state. Indicators are presented in CINSW’s Reporting for Better Cancer Outcomes (RBCO).

Collaborations and partnerships

We work collaboratively with several stakeholders, subject matter experts and community leaders to ensure access to cancer services is underpinned by world-class research. We aim to increase access, understanding and participation in cancer clinical trials for people in NSW.

Supporting cancer clinical trials workforce

Throughout the year, the Clinical Trials Program supports the research workforce by providing educational and professional development opportunities.
