The mesothelium is a thin slippery membrane that lines the inside of the chest and abdomen and covers the outer surface of organs in the body. Mesothelium that lines the inside of the chest and covers the lungs is called the pleura. Mesothelium that lines the inside of the abdomen and covers the gut and other organs is called the peritoneum.
There are two types of mesothelioma:
- Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the chest
- Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the abdomen.
People who have been exposed to asbestos are at risk of developing mesothelioma.
