Oesophageal cancer statistics

The oesophagus is part of the gastrointestinal system or gut. It is the tube that takes food and drink from the mouth to the stomach when you swallow. 

Oesophageal cancer starts when cells in the oesophagus become abnormal. These cells divide and grow to form a cancer.

There are two main types of oesophageal cancer that start in different types of cells. These are squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.
