Project Title: The rate of bilateral mastectomies to treat unilateral breast cancer in NSW

Lead researcher: Professor Claire Vajdic

Organisation: University of New South Wales

The Project:

The rate of removal of both breasts to treat breast cancer on one side has been increasing in the United States for over 20 years even though there is no evidence that removal of both breasts to treat breast cancer on one side improves patients’ survival. There is no information on the rate of removal of both breasts to treat breast cancer on one side in Australia.

This study is aimed at identifying the rate and trend of removal of both breasts to treat breast cancer on one side in NSW from 2000 to 2020 and to determine the factors associated with this, including having breast reconstruction.
