Leading Better Value Care: Breast Hypofractionation

The Cancer Institute NSW will lead the implementation of the Leading Better Value Care (LBVC) Tranche 2 initiative, Breast Cancer Hypofractionation.

What is the breast cancer hypofractionation initiative?

This initiative focuses on increasing access to hypofractionated radiotherapy for women with early-stage breast cancer in radiation oncology treatment centres across NSW.

Hypofractionated radiotherapy for early-stage breast cancer is recommended as the standard of care for the majority of women.

How will this initiative work?

The Institute has developed a suite of tools to support radiation oncology treatment centres in increasing the uptake of hypofractionation. The Institute will work with the Leading Better Value Care project teams across NSW to understand the variation in rates of hypofractionation for women with early-stage breast cancer and seek to increase access to hypofractionated radiotherapy as appropriate.

How we help

The Institute is supporting local health districts and specialty health networks to increase rates of hypofractionation by:

  • Reporting rates of hypofractionation across NSW radiation oncology treatments centres to local health districts and specialty health networks to understand areas of variation in the uptake of hypofractionation.
  • Partnering with local health districts to co-design tools to support the further uptake of hypofractionated radiotherapy.
  • Understanding the barriers and enablers to the uptake of hypofractionation for women with early-stage breast cancer in implementing hypofractionation, both prior to and during the initiative; and sharing these learnings across NSW.
  • Ensuring the effective and efficient use of resources by improving access to hypofractionation across NSW.
