Check In for Kin

Systems

Check In for Kin puts culture at the centre of how cancer information and care are delivered. It supports a health system that is culturally safe, sustainable and works for our families and Country.

People

We are building strong connections between Aboriginal communities, health services and the Cancer Institute NSW. We are also growing the skills of the people who bring this campaign to life.

Community

Check In for Kin is led with community. Aboriginal Medical Services across NSW are telling their own stories in their own voices, and helping mob connect with local health services and support.

Check in on your kin. Yarn about your health. Connect with your local Aboriginal Medical Service.

Checking in for kin helps you check in on yourself, your family and your mob. You do not need to feel sick to have a health check.

If it has been more than 12 months since your last health check, have a yarn with your local Aboriginal Medical Service or local health service about booking one.

About Aboriginal Health Checks

A 715 Aboriginal Health Check is available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of all ages. Checking in for kin helps you check in on yourself, your family and your mob.

Your family’s health journey holds valuable knowledge. Sharing your family health history can help your healthcare worker better understand your strengths, experiences and health needs, so they can support you in the way that is right for you and your mob.

Checking in for kin can also be an opportunity to talk about cancer prevention and make sure you are up to date with any cancer screening that may be right for you.

Hear from community

Hear from Aboriginal community members and health professionals about looking after your health, what to expect when checking in for kin and why making time for regular health checks matters.

Why regular health checks are important

You do not have to wait until something feels wrong to look after your health.

Regularly checking in for kin can help identify changes or health concerns early, sometimes before you notice any symptoms. Finding a health concern early can mean there are more options to manage or treat it.

Checking in for kin gives you an opportunity to:

  • yarn about any health concerns or questions
  • learn more about ways to stay healthy
  • check whether you are up to date with cancer screening and other important health checks
  • talk about your social and emotional wellbeing
  • get referrals or follow-up care if you need it
  • make a plan with your health professional to support your health and wellbeing.

Looking after health together

Checking in for kin is something you do together with your healthcare team. As part of the check, you can talk about developing a plan to stay healthy.

Checking in for kin can help you stay strong for the people and things that matter to you.

What happens during a health check

Your health professional will yarn with you about your health, wellbeing and any concerns you have.

Depending on your health needs, you may be able to access an Aboriginal Health Check every nine months, while regular contact with your local Aboriginal Medical Service can help you stay connected to the health information and support you need.

Follow-up care and support

The health check is not always a one-off appointment. Where additional care or support may be beneficial, your healthcare provider can yarn with you about available options and help connect you with services and supports.

If you agree, your doctor may refer you to up to 10 free follow-up services, including specialist, mental health and chronic disease prevention services.

How to get an Aboriginal Health Check

You can check in for kin at your local Aboriginal Medical Service and many GP clinics.

Contact your local Aboriginal Medical Service or local health service and ask about booking an Aboriginal Health Check.

When you make your appointment, you can ask:

  • whether the service provides Aboriginal Health Checks
  • what you need to bring
  • how long to allow for your appointment
  • what support is available if you need help getting to your appointment.
