Winner of the 2023 Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year

We’re honoured to recognise Professor Anthony Gill AM for his significant contributions in the field of cancer diagnosis and pathology, which have made profound clinical improvements for patients around the world.

Winner of the 2023 Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year

Professor Anthony Gill AM is Professor of Surgical Pathology at The University of Sydney and a senior staff specialist in Anatomical Pathology at Royal North Shore Hospital.

His clinical role concentrates on diagnosis and subclassifying cancers based on tissue biopsies and in 2010 he founded the Cancer Diagnosis and Pathology group—a research group focusing exclusively on cancer diagnosis and pathology. This group emphasises translating basic science discoveries into clinically available and useful diagnostic pathology tests deployed in routine clinical practice.

Recognised by the World Health Organization for classifying new cancer types

Professor Gill is internationally renowned for describing a new class of cancers known as ‘succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) deficient’ mutations. These unique tumours, alongside other entities he helped describe, are now recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as ‘new’ types of cancer. These tumours are now diagnosable with profound clinical importance for cancer centres around the world.

Putting Australia on the global map in pancreatic cancer research

Professor Gill helped put Australia on the global map in pancreatic cancer research, initially as lead pathologist, and then chairman of the Australian Pancreatic Genome Initiative. Highlights of his work in this area include a number of highest cited research papers in Australian history.

Since 2017, Professor Gill has served as a standing member of the editorial board of the WHO classification of tumours— the peak global group in cancer pathology responsible for setting the internationally agreed to guidelines adhered to by cancer researchers and clinicians worldwide.
