NSW Quitline

The NSW Quitline 13 7848 is a confidential telephone information and counselling service to help people who smoke and/or vape to quit and stay quit. NSW Quitline counsellors are trained professionals who provide:

  • A free Quitline counselling program is available. Regular supportive calls from a counsellor are available as part of the program. People who smoke and/or vape and use the Quitline program and receive up to six calls, can double their change of successfully quitting.
  • A Quit Kit containing helpful information about quitting. The kits are available to order in English, Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and Vietnamese.
  • NSW Quitline for Aboriginal people provides an individually tailored and culturally sensitive service for Aboriginal callers.
  • Callers from other culturally diverse communities can call the Translating and Interpreter Service and we have counsellors who speak a number of different languages
  • Support for family and friends of people who smoke and/or vape.

Data coverage

NSW Quitline collects basic information on all clients that contact the service and other demographic information (age, address, gender etc) are collected, subject to client’s preference and consent.

Data sources

NSW Quitline data is stored in an in-house service managed by the Cancer Institute NSW in compliance with Information Security Policy and with restricted access. This system stores all client interactions with NSW Quitline.

Data availability

There are several types of information that can be requested from NSW Quitline. This includes:

  • NSW Quitline Clients, Referrals, Assessments and Calls
  • NSW Quitline de-identified and aggregated data

Most recent year:  From 27 Feb-2024 to current day -2 days
Historical series: Feb 2016 –to 27 Feb 2024

Data elements

The data available from NSW Quitline include information on:

  • Clients- De identified and aggregated data only, including standard demographic information
  • Referrals
  • Assessments
  • Calls (inbound and outbound)

Data quality

The minimum dataset is currently available with scope to provide in depth measures in the future as the program evolves. Work is also being done to improve data quality.
