The Liverpool Medical Oncology Clinical Trials Unit has been a cornerstone of cancer research excellence in South Western Sydney for over 20 years, experiencing remarkable growth and innovation particularly over the past five years. The unit has evolved into a leading clinical trials centre in NSW, having enrolled over 1000 patients and currently supporting a portfolio of 80 trials with over 50 active trials.
The unit currently has a dedicated team of 20 Clinical Trial Operational Staff as well as highly skilled medical and nursing teams trained in clinical trials. The unit is proud of exceptional data quality and governance standards and the focus in the last few years has been on long-term sustainability with the strategy focused on three key pillars:
- People (patients, staff, customers)
- Financial Sustainability
- Process and Quality Improvement
Under dynamic leadership, the unit has expanded its capacity to deliver groundbreaking research, including pioneering first-in-world early phase clinical trials for novel cancer therapies. Most notably, the unit has established itself as a national leader in advancing equity in cancer clinical trial participation, developing innovative solutions to address barriers faced by the diverse multicultural population of South Western Sydney, including Arabic and Chinese clinical trial navigators. By bringing cutting-edge research closer to home and embedding culturally responsive approaches, the Liverpool Clinical Trials Unit is transforming clinical trial access and creating a sustainable model that combines research excellence with equitable participation.
