Winner of the Outstanding Cancer Clinical Trials Unit

Join us in celebrating the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, the winner of the 2022 NSW Premier’s Award for Outstanding Clinical Trials Unit.

Winner of the Outstanding Cancer Clinical Trials Unit

The Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Trials Program supports investment in infrastructure, systems and strategic initiatives to drive the efficient and effective conduct of clinical trials. This includes increasing the accrual of patients and accessibility to a portfolio of high-quality, public interest cancer clinical trials in NSW.

This year’s winner of the Outstanding Cancer Clinical Trials Unit is the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network for steadily increasing the number of investigator-initiated and commercially sponsored cancer trials open to recruitment from 2019 to 2022. This has resulted in a significant increase in the number of enrolments to these trials in the 2021-2022 period.

Working towards a 100% survival rate for children with cancer

Comprised of the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick, the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network conducts clinical trials from early to late phase to help young people live their healthiest lives.

The trials provide innovative cancer treatments to children and adolescents from regional and metropolitan locations.

The trial staff, including managers, study coordinators and researchers, demonstrate valuable engagement with the Cancer Institute NSW on various initiatives and consistently report high quality and timely clinical trial activity data.

The Cancer Institute NSW is honoured to support the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network through the Clinical Trials Program.

Professor Jacob George

Through the Network’s cancer centres (Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, and the Cancer Centre for Children at The Children's Hospital at Westmead), knowledge of laboratory science, diagnostics, translational clinical research, data science and psychosocial care is combined to help kids with cancer live their healthiest lives. The goal is to work towards a 100% survival rate for the children with cancer.

We congratulate the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network for improving the lives of young people and their families affected by cancer.

More information about the award

Making NSW a destination of choice for cancer clinical trials is one of the strategies of the NSW Cancer Plan.

The Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Trials Program supports Clinical Trial Units by funding Local Health Districts, Speciality Health Networks and Private Institutions for enrolments to investigator initiated cancer clinical trials and works collaboratively to develop a strategic approach for the selection and implementation of cancer clinical trials relevant to their population. The best performing Cancer Clinical Trial Unit is selected for this award through the data held in the Cancer Institute NSW Clinical Trials Portal for the period of 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022.

The successful Clinical Trial Unit received a prize of $10,000 towards the activities of the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit, and a commemorative award.
