A world-first study into the effect of tobacco plain packaging, published today in BMJ Open, has found the pioneering legislation is having a significant impact on smokers’ perceptions of cigarettes packs.

In 2012, the Cancer Institute NSW commissioned a survey into tobacco-related knowledge, attitudes and behaviour among Aboriginal people in NSW. This fact sheet outlines the survey results, which highlight a need for ongoing intervention and awareness through culturally-appropriate tobacco resistance and control programs that are supported by the Aboriginal community.

Association between tobacco plain packaging and Quitline calls: a population-based, interrupted time

This Cancer Institute NSW study found a significant increase in the number of calls to Quitline coinciding with the introduction of mandatory plain packaging of tobacco after other known confounders had been taken into account.

The Prevalence of behavioural and executive cognitive sequelae in patients with primary brain tumour
Brain damage as the result of primary brain tumours is well documented. This includes neurologic symptoms (eg headaches, dizziness) and cognitive impairments (eg memory problems). In contrast, the prevalence and correlates of behavioural impairments has received little systematic study.
