Winner of the 2024 Improving Equitable Outcomes Award

We are honoured to recognise Associate Professor Mei Ling Yap for her unwavering dedication to achieving equity in cancer control.

Winner of the 2024 Improving Equitable Outcomes Award

Associate Professor Yap is a radiation oncologist and researcher at South Western Sydney Local Health District, The George Institute for Global Health, and the Ingham Institute at UNSW.

Her clinical work serving priority populations has informed her research and she values close collaboration with people of lived experience and researchers who identify from these priority populations.

Associate Professor Yap’s research has led to policy impacts both nationally and internationally and had a profound impact on improving access to radiation therapy for people with cancer around the world.

Her research highlights that only one in three people diagnosed with cancer in NSW receive radiation therapy, often due to barriers such as distance to treatment centres, which creates inequalities in care access.

Associate Professor Yap is also an Executive Member of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) Global Oncology group, where she leads initiatives aimed at building cancer service capacity in low- and middle-income countries across the Asia-Pacific region.
