Winner of the 2024 Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year Award

We are honoured to recognise Professor David Thomas for his leadership in precision oncology and world-leading sarcoma research.

Winner of the 2024 Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year Award

Professor Thomas is the Director of the Centre for Molecular Oncology at UNSW and Head of Genomic Cancer Medicine at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

As one of Australia’s leading clinician scientists and founder of the national genomic cancer medicine centre, Omico, Professor Thomas’ work is helping extend the lives of thousands of people with incurable cancer through genomics in cancer care.

Professor Thomas’ work in sarcoma research has changed the global clinical practice for giant cell tumour of bone, and effective early detection strategies for patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome – a rare hereditary disorder that increases a person’s risk of cancer.

With over 270 publications and extensive citations, Professor Thomas is recognised for translating research into clinical practice, resulting in FDA, EMA, and PBS approvals for innovative treatments.

The Outstanding Cancer Researcher of the Year Award honours an individual who has made significant and fundamental contributions to any field of cancer research in NSW. The achievements of this individual have had a lasting impact on improving cancer outcomes for the people of NSW. This award also recognises the importance of demonstrating the researcher’s commitment to building the cancer research capacity of the state through leadership, mentorship and training.
