LGBTQ eLearning module: What we did
By adopting a co-design approach, the Module was developed by ACON’s Pride Training team in collaboration with the Institute’s Screening and Prevention Division and eviQ Education (eviQEd). This approach allowed us to draw expertise from across the cancer sector, LGBTQ subject matter experts, and the latest research.
“The teams from Pride Training, the Cancer Institute NSW and eviQ Education really enabled each other … we each brought our subject matter expertise to the table with a shared goal of creating an eLearning module that would be appreciated by the learners and that would have a positive impact on our communities.”- Kent Hildred, National Program Manager, Pride Training, ACON
The Module has been promoted on the Institute’s eviQEd website which is a freely available evidence-based cancer eLearning resource for health professionals. EviQEd’s rigorous development processes ensure that all resources are evidence-based, clinically relevant, visually appealing and interactive so that participants have a high quality and enjoyable learning experience.
The Module was released in January 2023. As part of the Module, participants completed a pre-training and a post-training survey to indicate their agreement on a number of statements in terms of their knowledge and confidence in treating LGBTQ people with cancer. In July 2023, we analysed the survey data from the first 100 individuals who had completed the Module to gain insight into the impact the training had on them.
Overall results
Findings indicate that participants increased their knowledge, confidence, and practical skills in treating LGBTQ communities with cancer; that all learning objectives were met (or partially met); that participants personally intended to make steps toward inclusivity and diversity in order to provide culturally safe healthcare to LGBTQ people with cancer; and suggested activities their workplace could make to provide equitable access and a safe environment for LGBTQ people with cancer.
